Sell Your GE Frame 5 Gas Turbine

Genloop buys GE Frame 5 gas turbines as principal, running, idle or mothballed, and handles the removal.

01 · The machine

In service since 1957, and still being built.

The GE Frame 5 is a heavy-frame gas turbine with more than 3,000 units built. The single-shaft MS5001 drives a generator and makes roughly 20 to 26 MW in its later N, P and PA models. The two-shaft MS5002 drives compressors and pumps at 26 to 34 MW. The MS5001 turns at about 5,100 rpm and is geared to its generator, so it serves 50 Hz and 60 Hz grids.

02 · What sets the value

What a buyer prices.

A Frame 5 can be sixty years old or nearly new, and the nameplate alone does not say which. These are the things a buyer looks at.

Which model

MS5001 models run from the L and M of the 1960s to the N, P and PA, and output rises with each. A PA at about 26 MW and an early unit at 16 MW are priced as different machines.

Single-shaft or two-shaft

An MS5001 is a generator drive. An MS5002 is a mechanical drive, built for compressors and pumps in oil and gas service. The buyers are different.

Time since the major

Hours and starts since the casing was last open. Baker Hughes, which builds and supports the frame today, puts the major inspection at 48,000 hours.

Uprates

Many units carry later hot gas path parts than they were built with, and GE had uprated more than 200 MS5001s by 1999. A buyer asks what is inside the casing, not what is on the nameplate.

Controls

Early units ran on Speedtronic Mark I and Mark II, and parts for those are hard to find. A buyer with one of those panels prices in a retrofit.

Rotor life

GE requires a rotor inspection at 200,000 hours or 5,000 starts. On a frame this old, that is one of the first things a buyer checks.

03 · Where it goes

Where a Frame 5 goes next.

Parts are easy to find and the machine is simple, which is why Frame 5s keep being moved and put back to work.

Oil and gas

Pipelines, gas plants, LNG and refineries, where the frame is already familiar.

Peaking and black start

Quick to start, and able to bring a dead system back.

Industrial power

Site power and cogeneration where a block of 20 to 25 MW fits the load.

Either grid

Gear-driven, so a unit can be rebuilt for 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

05 · Questions

What GE Frame 5 owners ask first.

The short answers. The detail is in the contract, and in the call that comes before it.

What is a used GE Frame 5 worth?

It depends on the model, whether it is single-shaft or two-shaft, the time since its last major, what uprates it carries, its controls and its records. No public database records what used turbines actually sell for, so advertised prices are asking prices. Genloop makes a firm offer after its own engineers have inspected the unit.

Is a Frame 5 too old to sell?

No. The design has been in service since 1957 and Baker Hughes still builds and supports it. Parts are readily available, and many units have been uprated with newer hardware. Age matters less than the model and the time since the last major.

Does Genloop buy two-shaft MS5002 units?

Genloop looks at both. The single-shaft MS5001 generator set is the usual case, and an MS5002 mechanical drive is looked at case by case.

Does Genloop buy Frame 5s that are not running?

Yes. Genloop buys units that are running, idle or mothballed. A unit that has been mothballed for several years is looked at case by case.

Can a Frame 5 move between 50 Hz and 60 Hz?

Yes. The MS5001 is gear-driven and GE applied it in both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets. Moving one between grids means a different gearbox and generator. Genloop will take one across frequencies, with the conversion priced in.

Who handles dismantling and removal?

Genloop does. Dismantling, export compliance and transport are Genloop’s scope, insured throughout, and written into the same contract as the purchase. The site is handed back on the schedule the contract sets.

Does Genloop charge a fee?

No. Genloop buys as principal and takes title, so there is no fee, no marketing period and no waiting for a buyer to appear.

06 · Direct

Tell us about the asset.

Every enquiry is read by the people who inspect, value and buy the equipment, and answered directly. Owners rarely have everything; send what exists and Genloop fills the gaps on site.

What to send, if you have it
Nameplate and configuration

Model (for example MS5001P or PA, MS5002C or D), serial number, rating, frequency, and what is included: gearbox, generator, driven equipment, auxiliaries.

Hours and starts

Fired hours and starts, and the duty the unit ran: base load, peaking, standby.

Inspection history

The last combustion and major inspections, with dates and open findings. Gaps are normal; say where they are.

Uprates and controls

Any uprate or parts changes since new, rotor hours and starts, and the control system now fitted.

Site and removal constraints

The window in which the equipment must be gone, crane and road access, and any export or permit requirements.

Title and encumbrances

Who owns the equipment, and what has to be released at closing.
